Bundestag Asks Government to Ensure that Circumcisions Remain Legal
In the continuing discussion in Germany on the religious practice of circumcision, the German Bundestag approved a motion on Thursday formally calling for the Federal Government to submit draft legislation this fall that would ensure that circumcision of minor boys is fundamentally allowed under the law. The motion, approved by a broad majority, is an important further step in ensuring legal certitude for the responsible practice of an important religious custom in Germany. The Federal Government is asked to draft legislation in consideration of child welfare, religious freedom as well as the rights of parents that ensures that medically professional circumcision without undue pain is allowed.
