Aviation's Forefront at the ILA Berlin
Just south of Berlin, on the grounds of the eagerly awaited and as yet unrealized Berlin Brandenburg Airport, the oldest aviation show in the world opened today, September 11. The ILA Berlin Air Show (“Internationale Luft- und Raumfahrtausstellung”) will run until September 16 in Schönefeld in the German province of Brandenburg. The exhibition will feature nine thematic “segments” covering, among others, commercial aircraft, military flight, space and a “Helicenter.”
Frankfurt am Main hosted the first ILA in 1909. In 2010, the last time the biennial expo was held, 235,000 visitors walked through the indoor and outdoor displays of 1,153 exhibitors. Of those visitors, 125,000 were industry professionals. For the first three days of the ILA, only said professionals are admitted to view the avant garde of their trade. From Friday until the close of the event on Sunday, September 16, the ILA opens for the general public as well.

Wait a sec, cars don't fly! True, but this contraption of the German Aerospace Center (DLR), called the RoboMObil, has drive, steering, shock-taking, and brake elements in each wheel, enabling it to be “as nimble as a crab.” (© picture alliance / Hans-Joachim Rech ) -
