Message from Foreign Minister Westerwelle on the occasion of Rosh Hashanah 5773 on September 16, 2012
I would like to wish the Jewish community and all their families and friends in Germany, in Israel and around the world joy and blessings for the New Year in 5773!
The new year brings new hope – above all, the hope of moving towards peace in the Middle East, for only peace can ensure the lasting security of the people of Israel and the entire region. Germany will do everything it can to support Israel and its neighbours on the path towards understanding.
We are happy and thankful that Jewish life in Germany has once again become an integral and vibrant part of our society. We will do everything we can to protect Jewish life here and to make sure that it can continue to flourish. This means that we will do our utmost to combat anti-Semitism, right-wing radicalism and xenophobia, which threaten our state as a whole. The Jewish communities in Germany must be able to practice their religion freely and responsibly. This is something I will work to protect.
Shana tova and shalom!
Dr Guido Westerwelle
