The Chinese artist and dissident Ai Weiwei will represent Germany at the Venice Biennale in 2013. He has been commissioned to design the German Pavilion with director Romuald Karmakar, the South African photographer Santu Mofokeng and the Indian photographer Dayanita Singh, according to an announcement from the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations (ifa) on Wednesday. The concept is to be developed by Ai Weiwei and then implemented by other artists, should he not be able to leave the country, said a spokesperson for the the German Pavilion. For several months this past year, the artist had been imprisoned in China.
Last year the national pavilion showed works of Christoph Schlingensief, curated by Susanne Gaenscheimer and Schlingensief’s wife, Aino Laberenz, after the artist's death.
