On January 26, 2012, Consul General Peter Rothen and Mrs. Gerlind Rothen hosted a reception in honor of the 2012 American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter Gala at their Residence in San Francisco. The Gala that will take place on March 3, 2012, in a spectular tented venue on San Francisco’s Union Square. All proceeds from that events will benefit disaster relief and readiness efforts in the Bay Area.

On January 21, 2012, the SPIE Photonics West opened its gates again at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. It is the largest international event in the world for three key technologies of the 21st century: optics, lasers, and photonics. At the event, industrial and medical applications showcase what impact these technologies will have on the respective industries. Furthermore, the Photonics West combines conferences and courses with an exhibition.

The program partners German university students studying at academic institutions across the US with teachers at American schools interested in giving their students a special treat: a lesson from a guest teacher from the “Land of Ideas.” The regional Goethe-Instituts (in Chicago, San Francisco, New York, Boston, and Washington) serve as facilitators, but it’s up to the German “diplomats in sneakers,” in cooperation with the American teachers, to decide on what topics to cover.

On Thursday, November 10, 2011 the Goethe-Institut in San Francisco presented a concert of the German band Madsen at the City College's Balboa Campus. Madsen was founded in 2004 by the brothers Sebastian, Sascha and Johannes Madsen and Niko Maurer in a small town in Northern Germany.

On Friday, 21 October 2011 the documentary Joschka and Mr. Fischer was presented at the Castro Theatre, a historic landmark movie palace in San Francisco. Director Pepe Danquart whose trip to San Francisco was sponsored by the German Consulate General attended the screening and was available for a follow-up Q&A session.
