Sixty years after the Berlin Airlift, 16 New England veterans received the German-American Friendship Award for their service during the 322 day mission to supply West Berlin with food and fuel.

The Day of German Unity, Germany’s national holiday, marks the day in 1990 on which the German Democratic Republic acceded to the Federal Republic of Germany. More than remembering the wall and armed guards that separated East from West during the Cold War, it celebrates their peaceful unification.
