Evening with Ambassador Highlights Ties Between Germany and Alabama
Ambassador Klaus Scharioth met with Alabama Congressman Jo Bonner, Alabama local elected officials and representatives of German companies with investments in the state on March 10 at the Ambassador’s Residence, highlighting the strong economic ties and friendship between Germany and the State of Alabama. Alabama today is home to 50 German companies—BASF, Degussa, Mercedes-Benz, among others—that employ upward of 12,000 people. ThyssenKrupp has selected Alabama as the home for its new state-of-the-art steel and stainless steel processing facility, representing an investment of $3.9 billion. Huntsville is known as “Rocket City” for its significance to the US space program, in which a large community of German rocket scientists and their families played a crucial role in the 1950s. Today, Huntsville is host to NAMEADSMA, the NATO agency that executes program management over one of the most important transatlantic armament programs, the Medium Extended Air Defense System, with the United States, Germany and Italy as partners.
And now, the Department of the Air Force has selected and industry team of Northrop Grumman and EADS North America to provide the next generation of aerial refueling aircraft. This program will enhance transatlantic relations and also the economy of Alabama. In welcoming the guests, Ambassador Scharioth described relations between Germany and Alabama as a success story and expressed his hope that the existing ties would serve as a basis for many more chapters in that story. Relations between Germany and Alabama are not only about business, Ambassador Scharioth said, but about friendship as well, as many Germans have come to love the state’s Southern hospitality.March 11, 2008
