At the New Year’s reception of the German American Business Council on January 10, Ambassador Scharioth thanked the GABC for its strong efforts and success in further expanding the outstanding business relationships between Germany and the United States. He highlighted the successes of the Transatlantic Economic Council and also pointed out the protocol that entered into force at the end of 2007 amending the German-American Double Taxation Convention. The GABC was involved in bringing about that significant protocol.

In his remarks at the reception, the Ambassador emphasized the importance of modern and efficient climate and energy policies to the environment but also to business and government. Germany is playing a pioneering role in international climate protection. With its integrated energy and climate program, which calls for a 40 percent reduction of emissions by 2020 below 1990 levels, the German Government has further cemented and proven this role. In Bali, the German delegation did its part to ensure that there will be an international agreement on climate protection immediately after the Kyoto Protocol expires.

Ambassador Scharioth noted that 2008 is the Year of the Sciences and said that Chancellor Angela Merkel’s proposal to institutionalize transatlantic science cooperation will bring a new dimension to bilateral relations.
