Galileo – Europe’s Satellite Navigation System

German Economy

With the laying of the foundation stone, construction has begun in Bavaria on a ground control center for Galileo, Europe’s satellite navigation system currently under development.

Galileo is a joint initiative of the European Commission and the European Space Agency to provide Europe with its own independent global civil satellite navigation system. Currently in a test phase, the first operational Galileo satellites are expected to go live in 2008, with eventually up to 30 satellites in orbit.

The state-of-the-art 16 million-euro facility in Oberpfaffenhofen near Munich is expected to be completed in spring 2008, when it will be handed over for operation by the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt or DLR). Up to 100 engineers and scientists will then be able to steer the Galileo satellites from the center.

Federal Transport Minister Wolfgang Tiefensee, Bavaria Minister President Edmund Stoiber and DLR Chairman Prof. Dr. Sigmar Wittig all attended the ceremonial laying of the foundation stone on November 7.
