Arts Germany has a great artistic tradition, dating to medieval times when famous painters such as Lucas Cranach and Albrecht Dürer lived there. In the 19th century, German art was one of the main influences on European Romanticism, with Caspar David Friedrich, Carl Spitzweg and Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein the leading figures. However, it was in the 20th century, especially in its first 30 years, that the power of visual arts from Germany was most visible. The German performing arts system is unique in its diversity, regional spread and system of financial support. The German public regards the performing arts as an open forum for the exchange of ideas and experiences. It has long served as a trigger of vital public debate.

In the first third of the 20th century, German architecture was highly
acclaimed throughout the world. The Bauhaus movement and its philosophies
of "Neue Sachlichkeit" ("New Objectivity") and functionalism
pioneered new trends in archiecture and design. Today, these achievements
