Pop Music

Young people in Germany today listen to much of the same music as their English-speaking counterparts. In fact, German music groups often sing in English. MTV and VIVA, two music video stations, are popular, especially among the young. Since the early 1990s, the Love Parade, the world’s biggest techno rave, has been held each year in Berlin, attracting more than one million young people from all over the globe.

In recent years, the German pop music scene has enjoyed a tremendous surge in popularity. But it is not the revival of the catchy German pop song that is celebrated here. Rather, it is a diversified scene, representing a spectrum of international music genres — Pop, Hip Hop, Electro, Rock and Punk music. Bands like Kraftwerk and Nena from the “Neue Deutsche Welle” (New-Wave German) movement of the 1980s pioneered the field of electronic music. An older generation of singer-songwriters like Herbert Grönemeyer and Marius Müller-Westernhagen or the East German civil-rights activist and singer Wolf Biermann as well as punk bands like Die Toten Hosen, Die Ärtzte and the East German Puhdys still fill stadiums with their loyal fans. More recently, bands like the crossover rock/hip-hop bands H-Blockx, Tocotronic and Sportfreunde Stiller, pop-groups like Selig and Xavier Naidoo as well as the hugely popular German hip-hop bands Fettes Brot, Absolute Beginner, and Fantastische Vier have also developed large fan bases. All are represented by songs that regularly top the German music charts.
