German Embassy Announces Special Screening of “The Edge of Heaven”
Film enthusiasts will have a chance to view director Fatih Akin’s latest critically acclaimed work, “The Edge of Heaven” (Auf der anderen Seite), at a special pre-screening on January 25 at the AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Spring, MD. German Ambassador Klaus Scharioth will host a wine reception after the 7 p.m. screening. Akin’s new film is a poignant tale that traces the intertwined lives of six individuals, crisscrossing Germany and Turkey. In Hamburg, life-changing events occur for a Turkish-German pensioner and his university professor son after the father’s favorite prostitute becomes his live-in girlfriend. In Istanbul, the prostitute’s radical student daughter flees to Hamburg after becoming involved in a police riot. The characters’ efforts to find each other, their failures, sidetracks, and the impact their actions have on the lives of the other characters they encounter create a mesmerizing tapestry of a story. The heart and soul of the film, however, resides in the fine exploration of the relationships between the exquisitely realized characters: fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, and the forging of new relationships between friends and lovers. Fans of German cinema will recognize Fassbinder muse Hanna Schygulla, here giving a remarkable—and surprising—performance. “The Edge of Heaven” has been awarded Best Screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival and the European Film Awards and it received the 2007 European Parliament Lux Prize. Akin views this film as the second part of a trilogy started with his 2003 “Head-On” [Gegen die Wand], which was awarded the Berlinale Golden Bear as well as Best Film at the German and European Film Awards.
