This year, seven international stars and film experts will decide who is to take home the Golden Bear and the Silver Bears at the Berlin International Film Festival. Under Jury President Paul Schrader, Hiam Abbass, Mario Adorf, Gael García Bernal, Willem Dafoe, Nansun Shi and Molly Malene Stensgaard will bring glamour, passion and expertise to the festival, known as the Berlinale.

The festival opens on February 8 with the world premiere of Olivier Dahan’s “La Vie En Rose,” a cinematic memorial to legendary French singer Edith Piaf.

The competition program consists of 26 films, including 19 world premieres, six international premieres and one European premiere. Among the contenders are Clint Eastwood’s “Letters From Iwo Jima,” “Notes on a Scandal” by Richard Eyre, “Angel” by François Ozon, Steven Soderbergh’s “The Good German” and Robert De Niro’s “The Good Shepherd.”

In this year’s homage program, the Berlin International Film Festival is dedicating a showcase to renowned American director Arthur Penn. Penn is considered one of the precursors of the New Hollywood era and made cinematic history with movies such as “Bonnie and Clyde” (1967), “Alice’s Restaurant” (1969) and “Night Moves” (1975). As part of the homage, Penn will be awarded the Honorary Golden Bear for Lifetime Achievement.

The festival’s retrospective will look at the image of women in the era of silent film.  It will feature 30 silent films portraying the “New Woman,” an image reflecting the social changes at the beginning of the 20th century.

The European Film Market (EFM), the film trade fair integrated into the Berlinale, has evolved into one of the most important events for the international film business.

Yet the Berlinale is not just an industry meeting. With more than 180,000 tickets sold, it enjoys the largest audience of any film festival worldwide.
