Engelbert Humperdinck’s “Hänsel und Gretel” Performed At German Embassy

The Beethoven Society warmed life at the Embassy up considerably on a cold and wintry night in Washington on December 17, 2007, hosting a jolly rendition of Engelbert Humperdinck’s much-loved opera “Hänsel und Gretel”.

Well staged and costumed, the brilliantly sung production was realized by Bel Cantanti Opera, a four-year-old opera company which has cut a broad swath across the local musical firmament.  The roles of the children were admirably taken by Meghan McCall and Jessica Renfro, and Michelle Rice was a frightening, if agreeable witch.

The Beethoven Society and Bel Cantanti collaborate frequently at the Embassy for such evenings, which are invariably followed by jolly receptions prepared by Embassy staff, and Monday was no exception with all enjoying an excellent warding off of winter cold.
