Leipzig String Quartet to perform free concert at National Gallery of Art
“If there is a Leipzig sound, this is it!” wrote the The New York Times about a performance by the Leipzig String Quartet. Now, Washingtonians will have the opportunity to get better acquainted with the sound of Leipzig, a charming city in Saxony known for its musical history and described as “little Paris” in Goethe’s “Faust.” Come enjoy the Leipzig String Quartet as they perform a free concert in commemoration of Beethoven’s birthday at the National Gallery of Art on Sunday, December 16, at 6:30 p.m. Founded in 1988, the renowned Leipzig String Quartet has been described by the Neue Zürcher Zeitung as “one of the towering and most versatile quartets of our time.” To celebrate their 20th anniversary next year, this award-winning ensemble has devoted itself to a cycle of Beethoven quartets in honor of the great composer. Members Andreas Seidel and Tilman Büning on violin, Ivo Bauer on viola, and Matthias Moosdorf on cello combine expertise and experience gained through a variety of accomplishments. In addition to the group’s concert series performances in the Gewandhaus, three of the members previously held first chairs in the world-famous Gewandhaus Orchestra. They have studied under many well-known musicians, participated and received honors in multiple competitions, and held concerts throughout the world. The concert by the Leipzig String Quartet at the National Gallery of Art, which is presented in cooperation with the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Embassy Series, is free of charge and will take place in the Large Auditorium of the East Building Concourse. The entrance to the East Building of the National Gallery of Art is located at 4th and Constitution Avenue, NW, Washington, DC. For more information, please visit the museum’s website. Links
