Dirk Nowitzki Named NBA Most Valuable Player

Dirk Nowitzki Honor: The Würzburg native received the NBA's highest honor after nine years in the league. dpa

It doesn't matter that Dirk Nowitzki pulled a disappearing act in the playoffs. The Dallas Mavericks superstar was the best player on the best team in the regular season, and he was rewarded for it on Tuesday. The German wunderkind was named the US National Basketball Association (NBA)'s Most Valuable Player, marking the first time a European-born player has received the league's highest individual honor.

The 28-year-old Nowitzki joined the exclusive fraternity by outdistancing former teammate, close pal and two-time MVP Steve Nash of the Phoenix Suns. The nine-year NBA veteran totaled 1,138 points, including 83 first-place votes, from a panel of sportswriters. Nash received 44 first-place votes and 1,013 points.

Heart-broken after suffering a meltdown to Miami Heat in the 2006 NBA Finals, the determined Nowitzki averaged 24.6 points, 8.9 rebounds and a career-best 3.4 assists en route to taking the Mavericks to a league-best 67-15 mark - tying for the sixth best single-season winning percentage. But the sixth-time All-Star forward struggled to find his game in the playoffs. As a result, the Western Conference champs were sent crashing out in the first-round by the Golden State Warriors.
