Ambassador Scharioth and Rotary Club Plant Cherry Tree on National Mall
Ambassador Klaus Scharioth planted a young Yoshino cherry tree on the National Mall, near the Washington monument, on April 30, an honor bestowed on him by the Rotary Club of Washington, DC. The Rotary Club had arranged for the tree planting in collaboration with the National Park Service, its partner in the project. “Save Planet Earth” has been the Rotary Club of Washington, DC's theme since 1991. Since then, the club has been “re-leafing” the city, planting 232 Yoshino cherry trees around the Tidal Basin in honor of the club's speakers. The project serves as a good example of how everyone can contribute in his or her way to protect the environment. The Ambassador is proud to be an honorary member of the Rotary Club and was thrilled to take part in this important project and lend a hand personally with the planting.
“Environmental protection and climate protection policy play a very prominent role in German policy,” Scharioth said. “In this field, Europe and the US can and must be pioneers. We are among the world’s most innovative economies; we have top technology, top researchers, top universities; we have the two most integrated markets worldwide. Together we must turn the tide and jointly tackle the challenges of climate change. And we can only succeed if we do it together. Let's do it.” April 30, 2008 Links
