Opening of Carnegie Hall’s Berlin in Lights Festival
Ambassador Klaus Scharioth co-hosted a reception on the opening night of Carnegie Hall’s Berlin in Lights Festival on November 2. In his greeting, Ambassador Scharioth highlighted how the cultural heritage and the continued support of the arts in the city of Berlin have shaped the rich cultural scene of Germany’s vibrant capital today. He mentioned that Berlin also celebrated the city of New York with events held in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the House of the World Cultures, a building that was originally a gift of the U.S. Government. These two cultural exchanges, he said, provide an ideal opportunity not only to celebrate the ongoing transatlantic relationship between the United States and Germany but also to reflect on the similarities and the differences between these two great cultural metropolises. Ambassador Scharioth expressed his gratitude to Chairman Weill, Sir Clive Gilinson, and the Carnegie Hall Board of Trustees as well as the many partner venues for organizing and hosting the Berlin in Lights festival. Following the reception, the internationally acclaimed singer and composer Max Raabe and the Palast Orchester opened the Berlin in Lights festival and captivated the large audience in attendance with their repertoire of international hits, cabaret songs, and original compositions. The Berlin in Lights festival is the first international festival hosted by the Carnegie Hall. The related events take place at a variety of partner venues throughout New York City through November 18. November 14, 2007 Links
