Ambassador Scharioth Honors “Lives of Others” Director
Ambassador Klaus Scharioth honored filmmaker Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, the director of “The Lives of Others” (Das Leben der Anderen) with a pre-screening reception at the AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center in Silver Spring on Saturday, November 11. The film is one of two German features in the 2006 European Film Showcase, the second film being Hans Christian Schmid’s “Requiem” starring Sandra Hüller who won the Best Actress Award at the 2006 Berlinale. Reception guests later joined a crowd of about 350 people to watch the movie in AFI’s packed historic theater. After the screening, the director answered audience questions in a Q&A session. “The Lives of Others” is the debut feature from talent-to-watch Henckel von Donnersmarck, an epic film from the former East Germany boasting gripping drama and outstanding performances from its all-star cast. Set in East Berlin in 1984, it tells the story of a Stasi agent (Ulrich Muehe) tasked with spying on a playwright (Sebastian Koch) and his actress girlfriend (Martina Gedeck). The agent soon finds himself absorbed by the couple’s domestic drama which develops into a basic moral conflict when his bosses’ ulterior motives come to light and he finds his loyalties challenged.
“The Lives of Others” is the winner of seven German film awards, it received six nominations for the European Film Awards and it is the 2006 Oscar selection from Germany for Best Foreign Language Film. The festival, through November 19, is presented by the American Film Institute (AFI) in collaboration with the Cultural Counselors of European Union Member States and includes 27 films from 21 EU member states.
