Ambassador Tours Newseum, Future Site of Wall Exhibit
Ambassador Klaus Scharioth visited what is soon to be Washington D.C.’s newest museum, the Newseum, currently under construction a stone's throw from the U.S. Capitol. With Charles L. Overby, chairman and CEO of the Newseum and the Freedom Forum, and Newseum President Peter S. Prichard, Ambassador Scharioth toured the Pennsylvania Avenue site, where among its permanent exhibits, the Newseum will house a large section of the Berlin Wall, including a watchtower.
"The fall of the Berlin Wall was a wonderful moment in German history and indeed for the world, and the Newseum will soon make available to a whole new audience this story of the peaceful triumph of ordinary, freedom-loving people over an oppressive regime," Ambassador Scharioth said after the visit. "I am glad that the design of the building will allow even passersby a glimpse of the wall remnant and a taste of this historic moment."
When it opens in 2007, the Newseum will be an interactive museum of news, offering visitors an experience that blends five centuries of news history with up-to-the-second technology and hands-on exhibits. The building exterior features a 74-foot-high marble engraving of the First Amendment and a front wall of glass. The Berlin Wall exhibit will be located on the entrance level and will be visible from upper levels of the museum as well.
The Freedom Forum, based in Arlington, VA, funds the operation of the Newseum, the First Amendment Center and Diversity Institute. November 16, 2006 Link
