East Coast Debut of Wolfgang Tillmans First US Retrospective Exhibition
The East Coast debut of Wolfgang Tillmans’ first retrospective exhibition in the United States opened at the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, DC, on May 10. Often called a chronicler of his generation, Tillmans is internationally renown and has been awarded the prestigious Turner Prize. To highlight the artist’s achievements and to welcome him to Washington, Ambassador Klaus Scharioth will host a reception in Tillmans’ honor at the museum. Wolfgang Tillmans was born in Remscheid, Germany, in 1968. After his studies at the Bournemouth & Poole College of Art in Dorset, he moved to London. He then began to publish his documentary photographs of the European club scene in various fashion and lifestyle magazines.
He became known for his intimate and evocative portraits and still life photographs. These works often capture friends or acquaintances in seemingly casual poses or they focus on moments or objects in everyday life that are frequently overlooked. Many of these images also contain subtle allusions to Tillmans’ interest in human rights issues.
The artist challenges the conventions of displaying photographs through the distinctive installations he designs for the gallery spaces. Incorporating both framed and unframed ink-jet prints and C-prints of various sizes, Tillmans creates non-traditional arrangements that stimulate viewers to make unique associations with the images based on the placement and scale of the works.
The Hirshhorn exhibition includes around 300 photographs, a video and installations of works spanning Tillmans’ entire career. The exhibition will be on view at the Hirshhorn Museum daily from 10:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. through August 12, 2007. May 18, 2007 Photos used with permission from the Hirshhorn Museum Links
