Ulrich Mühe, an award-winning actor who was known for his versatility on stage and screen, died at the age of 54 on July 22 in Walbeck in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. Mühe had recently gained international recognition for his moving performance as the East German Stasi secret police officer in the Oscar Award-winning film “The Lives of Others.” Mühe was honored with the best actor award by both the European Film Festival and the German Film Festival in 2006.

He began his acting career in Karl-Marx-Stadt (present-day Chemnitz) in East Germany, but his talent soon brought him to East Berlin, where he later took an active role in the demonstrations against the communist regime just days before the wall fell in 1989. After reunification, he continued to inspire audiences with his performances in dramatic and comedic roles.

Mühe had been suffering from stomach cancer.

Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed her sadness and Germany’s mourning at the news of his death in a letter to his wife, actor Susanne Lothar:

Ulrich Mühe was an inimitable actor, who enriched and influenced German theater and film with his life’s work. He mastered the entire repertoire of stage skills like no other and was able to play an extraordinarily broad range of characters. Ulrich Mühe consistently captivated audiences and critics with his effortless acting – I am thinking in particular of his portrayals in Heiner Müllers dramas, in engaging comedies, and as Gerd Wiesler in “The Lives of Others.”

... Germany mourns the loss of an outstanding artist and a great public figure.
