Founded in 1992, the RIAS Berlin Commission offers a six-week exchange program in the USA for German radio and TV journalists, in the spring and autumn of each year. The program consists of an information program in Washington and New York, an internship, and a period of study at a university school of journalism. Special consideration is granted to applicants from the New Länder. A two week editors' program on a chosen subject is offered to experienced journalists each year in autumn.

Also in spring and autumn, the RIAS Berlin Commission offers to American journalists a two-week program in Germany, which can be extended by another fourteen days for personal research or internship.
