Helping Hands from German Town Reach Out to Bereaved New Yorkers
In a gesture of friendship with the children of New York, 700 elementary school students from Gronau, a small town in northern Germany, have created a colorful symbol of German-American solidarity. Their collective art project, "Have a Heart for the Children of New York," composed of 13 white banners decorated with the handprint of each child, was presented to the United States this month by Beate Lindemann of the Atlantik-Brücke, a nonprofit organization for German-American friendship. The banners are currently on display in the lobby of the German House in New York City. Every child who contributed creative talents to the art project also donated a mark to a fund for New York children affected by the terrorist attacks of September 11. On December 12 in New York, the Atlantik-Brücke will host a gala dinner benefiting its student exchange program, Youth for Understanding.
Proceeds from the event will go toward a year-abroad fellowship program for high school students who lost parents in the attacks.
