DAAD Program Brings Iraqi Scientists to Germany

Eighteen young Iraqi scientists arrived in Germany in December to take part in a special DAAD fellowship program which will allow selected participants to begin masters programs at German universities.

This is the first year for the special fellowship program, which is funded by the German Foreign Office. The program targets young Iraqi men and women with bachelor’s degrees in the fields of archaeology, natural sciences, engineering, or economics, as well as medicine and public health, who are working toward an academic career at an Iraqi university.

The participants will first take part in a month-long language and regional studies course at the University of Essen. During this time, professors will conduct an additional selection process to identify 12 candidates who will receive fellowships for three-year masters programs at various German universities. A formal selection process in Iraq was not possible due to the strained security situation there.

Funding for the special DAAD program is part of the Foreign Office’s contribution to cooperation with Iraq in the field of higher education. Building contacts in the academic and science fields also contributes to the networking of civil societies after years of isolation.
