Cloughly’s outstanding achievements in teaching and promoting the German language, German President Horst Koehler has awarded her the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. Dr. Cloughly, the former President of the American Association of Teachers of German in Southern California and a German teacher at Polytechnic School in Pasadena as well as at Citrus College in Glendora, received the award in a ceremony at the Bridges Hall of Music at Pomona College in Claremont on Sunday, October 16, 2005. The award was presented by German Consul General Dr. Christian Stocks during the intermission of a concert of the Claremont Symphony Orchestra. It was Dr. Cloughly’s wish that the presentation of the Cross of the Order of Merit be combined with a concert of German masterpieces performed by the Claremont Symphony Orchestra of which she has been a member since 1974 and the principal French hornist since 1978.
