Dr. Cecilia Louise Cloughly receives the Cross of the Order of Merit
of the Federal Republic of Germany
Claremont – In recognition of Dr. Cecilia L. Cloughly’s
outstanding achievements in teaching and promoting the German language,
German President Horst Koehler has awarded her the Cross of the Order
of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. Dr. Cloughly, the former
President of the American Association of Teachers of German in Southern
California and a German teacher at Polytechnic School in Pasadena as
well as at Citrus College in Glendora, received the award in a ceremony
at the Bridges Hall of Music at Pomona College in Claremont on Sunday,
October 16, 2005. The award was presented by German Consul General Dr.
Christian Stocks during the intermission of a concert of the Claremont
Symphony Orchestra. It was Dr. Cloughly’s wish that the presentation
of the Cross of the Order of Merit be combined with a concert of German
masterpieces performed by the Claremont Symphony Orchestra of which she
has been a member since 1974 and the principal French hornist since 1978.
Dr. Cloughly was honored with the German award for her outstanding
lifelong commitment to the German language and to the teaching of German.
For nearly 40 years she has been engaged in teaching German as a foreign
language, in academic research, in the promotion of the German language
and organizing student exchanges between Germany and the United States
of America as well as serving in the American Association of Teachers
of German (AATG) on the local, state and federal level. Her most recent
accomplishment is the German Language Opportunities Website, GLOW ( www.learngerman.us ),
an interactive data base containing approximately 10,000 entries of all
kinds of German programs.
On November 19, 2005 in Baltimore Dr. Cloughly will be named Outstanding
German Educator (grades 9-12) at the national meeting of the American
Association of Teachers of German. This award includes a two-week seminar
sponsored by the Checkpoint Charlie Foundation in Berlin.
After graduating from Oberlin College in Ohio with a B.A. in Music
and German, Dr. Cloughly spent one year at the University of Munich as
a Fulbright Scholar. In 1970 she graduated from Northwestern University
in Evanston, Illinois, with a Ph.D in German Literature. Since 1968 she
has taught German and worked as a college administrator. From 1974-1989
Dr. Cloughly was an Associate Professor of German at Pomona College where
she also was the Director of International Education and the Director
of the Oldenborg Center for Modern Languages & International Relations.
Since 1994 she has organized high school student exchanges to Germany
for the Polytechnic School. She has written two books and published several
articles on study abroad, foreign language education, German literature
and music.
