Opening Reception for Students of GASA Art Exhibit Los Angeles - On May 20, 2005 the consulate hosted the opening reception for the art exhibit entitled “Oh Wie Schön ist Deutschland ” by students of the German American School Association. In his opening remarks, Consul General Dr. Hans J. Wendler noted that this was the first exhibit featuring students at the consulate and that he was impressed with the quality and variety of art work submitted by the students. To illustrate the theme“ Oh How Beautiful is Germany,“students depicted everything from German castles to cows. Dr. Wendler went on to stress the importance of the ten Saturday German schools; giving young people the opportunity to learn German from the kindergarten level up to high school. He noted that all this would not be possible without the German American School Association and, especially, without all the teachers, whom he thanked for their hard work and dedication. The afternoon still had a few surprises in store. To show appreciation for their effort, each student artist was presented with a T-shirt and gift certificate. And to top it all off, a special treat was arranged by Martina Tassius, a GASA teacher and assistant in the passport department of the consulate. Magician Sam Shazam entertained both young and old with his repertoire of magic tricks. An enjoyable afternoon was had by all!
