On January 28 and 29, 2008, Consul General Dr. Heimsoeth embarked
on a two-day visit of the University town of Syracuse. Honorary Consul
Christian Kölbl accompanied him.
Dr. Heimsoeth addressed 80 students of Cicero-North Syracuse High
School and answered their questions. Since 1998, German classes
at the school have a pen pal program with the “Albert Schweitzer
Gymnasium” in Southwestern Germany and for many years videoconferences
are regularly held between students of both schools. Dr. Heimsoeth
commended the program as a wonderful way of cooperation to improve
the foreign language skills of students from both schools.
Later the Consul General gave a lecture “Germany, Europe
and the US- towards a new global partnership” in front of
20 graduate students of Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public
Affairs of Syracuse University. It was followed by a lively Q&A
session.
A highlight of his stay was a visit of the library of Syracuse University.
The Library houses the collection of books, papers and manuscripts
of Leopold von Ranke. The German historian Leopold von Ranke is
considered the pioneer of modern historiography. The 280 items-collection
of notes, memorabilia, newspaper clippings, photographs, as well
as poems and family letters arrived in Syracuse from Berlin in March
1888. Included were, well preserved and on display, also Ranke's
desk and chair and his portrait.
On the second day of his stay, Dr. Heimsoeth visited Hamilton College
in Clinton, NY, giving a lecture and participating in a discussion
with students of Political Science.
He stressed the importance of regularly visiting the outer reaches
of the administrative district of the consulate where a lot of work
and dedication is given to the teaching of the German language culture
and heritage.
