David W. Detjen received the Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit
of the Federal Republic of Germany from the hands of Consul General
Dr. Hans-Jürgen Heimsoeth on February 29, 2008. The ceremony
took place at at the Consul General's Residence in New York.
In his eulogy, Consul General Dr. Hans-Jürgen Heimsoeth praised
the impressive list of accomplishments of Mr. Detjen, calling him
"the quintessential German-American". Dr. Heimsoeth described
Mr. Detjen as a true leader who deeply believes in the importance
of the ties between Germany and the US. "Mr. Detjen is a vital
representative of this lasting bilateral relationship", the
Consul General said.
Having studied in Tübingen/Germany and St. Louis, Mr. Detjen
has been versed in the customs and the knowledge of both countries
for his entire adult life, a quality that has served him during
his law career and in his many leadership roles. He specializes
in international practice and serves as chief editor of the International
Law Practicum.
He was one of the first members of the German Forum which contributed
prominently to the foundation of the Deutsche Schule New York (German
School New York).
