Germany at PEN World Voices Festival in New York City

On Saturday, May 3, the tiny "Deutsches Haus at NYU" was hardly recognizable. On the ground floor DJ’s from Austria, Switzerland and Germany made a young crowd of nearly 400 people dance through the night. At the same time the first floor was mostly in Swiss hand, preparing Raclette. Whoever made his way to the basement of the house could find a classroom that served as VIP Lounge. Popular German authors like Ingo Schulze, Daniel Kehlmann and Michael Richter followed the invitation of the German Consulate. They enjoyed wine, beer and appetizers in a relaxing atmosphere while talking to Consul General Dr. Heimsoeth, Austria’s Consul General Brigitte Blaha, various representatives from PEN as well as the Pulitzer Price winning American novelist Jeffrey Euginides. The German-Austrian-Swiss “Appetizers Party” was definitely a highlight of the German participation in the 2008 PEN Festival.

The PEN World Voices Festival of International literature was celebrated from April 29 to May 4 in New York. German-speaking participants made an outstanding and successful contribution to the festival program. In readings, panels, interviews and discussions, the authors from Germany (Daniel Kehlmann, Michael Krüger, Jutta Richter, Bernhard Schlink and Sasa Stanisic) not only presented their works to the audience, but also an important part of German culture.

The German Consulate General New York supported the PEN Festival and the German authors. In collaboration with the Austrian Cultural Forum New York, the Consulate General of Switzerland New York, the Deutsches Haus at NYU, the German Book Office and the Goethe Institut New York, it released a booklet “ Appetizers from Austria, Germany and Switzerland” containing sample texts and other information from each German-speaking participant. The bright-colored booklet was handed out at most of the events and contributed significantly to making “our” authors more visible.

A great success for German literature in New York!
