German Ambassador
honors Veterans of the Berlin Airlift
This year we are celebrationg the 60th anniversary of the Berlin
Airlift, the heroic humanitarian action of the US and British Air Force
to supply food to the 2.2 million people in West Berlin for a period
of
16 months after the Soviets blockaded all land, rail and waterways
from
Western Germany to West Berlin. This first major confrontation of the
Cold War became the foundation of German-American friendship until
today.
On this occasion a memorial concert was held on May 2 in St. Mark's
Lutheran church in San Francisco to honor the Airlift veterans from
the
Bay Area. Consul General Rolf Schütte presented the German American
Friendship Awards to the veterans, that were bestowed upon them by
the
German Ambassador in Washington.
350 guests listen to the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie and Berkeley
Symphony Orchestra conducted by Maestro Kent Nagano in a competely
sold
out event. Both the veterans and the musicians received standig
ovations
from the audience.
Our picture shows the veterans in the first row,
Maestro Kent Nagano with Consul General Schütte, Consul Tietz,
Col
Crowhurst and Lt. Col Lloyd (Travis AFB) in the second row and the
Berkeley Symphony and Junge Deutsche Philharmonie musicians.
Speech by Consul General R. Schuette on this occasion.

The German-American Heritage Foundation
of the USA (GAHF) needs your help:
Let’s not allow our children and grandchildren to be denied the history
of their German-speaking forebears nor the cultural and economic impact of our
ancestors on America. The time has come for us to create a national German-American
heritage center.
The GAHF has already raised nearly $1.0 million in the past six months, but they
still need to raise an additional $2.0 million to complete the purchase and renovation
of Hockemeyer Hall in Washington, DC, to serve as the Heritage Center. The GAHF
signed a Letter of Intent, but must raise the additional funds by the end of
October 2007.
