Welcome to the website of the German Consulate General in San Francisco. Here you will find information on our services of passport and visa, the work of our Consulate General, news related to Germany as well as German institutions and activities in our area of jurisdiction.

Our area of jurisdiction covers the Pacific Northwest of the United States:

Northern California, Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington State, Wyoming and the U.S. Territories Baker, Howland, Jarvis, Johnston Islands, Midway and Palmyra Island.


Our German language website features information relevant for German citizens.

Please note that for all legal and consular matters (incl. passport, ID Card and Visa applications, Citizenship matters, family law matters ( registration of marriage, name declaration, acknowledgement of divorce), Certifications ( of signature, fotocopies, good conduct) you have to make an appointment through the 

Appointment-System of the German Foreign Office:

To avoid appointments in wrong categories, be advised to schedule an appointment on a PC and not by smartphone or tablet.

Please, note that every family member needs a separate appointment.

Please submit applications of the following categories via mail:

Application to retain the German citizenship

Application for naturalization according to Article 116 par. 2 of the Basic Law

Family matters (i.e. registration of birth, marriage, name declarations, acknowledgement of divorce)

Please do not call to ask for the current status of your matter, especially with regards to passport and visa inquiries. We inform you as soon as you can pick up your passport/visa/permit to keep German citizenship/certificate of naturalization or we will send it to you upon agreement.

The German School Washington D.C.’s Students Found Businesses project took second place at the annual German Schools Abroad competition of the Association of German Chambers of Commerce and Industry (DIHK). On 1 January 2016 Germany has assumed the Chairmanship of the Organization for Security and Co‑operation in Europe (OSCE) and is therefore be responsible for steering the Organization safely through the stormy tides of crises and challenges in 2016. Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has presented the details of the Chairmanship’s programme to the 57 OSCE participating States in Vienna on 14 January 2016.

The IPS program of The German Bundestag gives well-qualified young people with a strong interest in politics from the USA, France, Israel and Central, Eastern and South Eastern Europe and the Arab world the opportunity to gain first-hand experience of Germany's system of parliamentary government. Through fifteen-week placements with Members of the Bundestag, participants are introduced to the wide variety of tasks carried out in a Member’s office. Scholarship-winners are chosen by the Bundestag’s independent selection panel.
