About the Embassy
The Embassy
The Embassy is Germany`s representation in the United States. The Ambassador
and the Foreign service officers maintain contacts with their US counterparts in the State Department and in other federal departments and public institutions.
They also establish relationships with private institutions, organizations and individuals with connections to or interest in Germany. The embassy is also home to a Consulate (one of eight in the
US), which provides visa services for those who would like to travel to Germany and a range of services for German citizens.
The Ambassador
Ambassador Klaus Scharioth is Germany`s highest ranking representative to the American government. Close contacts with members of the US Administration, with Senators
and Congressmen as well as with American cultural and business worlds are crucial to the Ambassador`s job maintaining and furthering the relationsship between Germany and the United States.
The Ambassador is supported in his role by the Deputy
Chief of Mission and by the Foreign service officers
in the Embassy`s departments. They analyze US policies and politics and send reports to Berlin to keep the German government informed about the US Administration`s plans and initiatives. They also
write home about trends and ideas in the public discourse that are not official but may one day come to be policy. For that reason, Foreign service officers maintain contacts not only with politicians
from both sides of the aisle but also with professors, journalists and think tanks, among others.
