Cultural Department
The cultural department, headed by Ricarda Redeker, contributes to the Embassy’s mission of fostering German-American relations in numerous ways. The department’s seven staff members organize cultural events and collaborate on other, privately organized events; monitor the administration of university and high school exchange programs; support the instruction of the German language in the U.S.; support German schools in the U.S.; promote German sports in the U.S.; facilitate the return of cultural objects relocated, moved, or seized between 1933 and 1945; and maintain contacts with German-American associations. (Nearly 43 million Americans cited German as their primary cultural heritage during the 2000 U.S.-census.) In addition, regular meetings with the other 27 European cultural counselors and the Delegation of the European Commission lend a European perspective to our work.
We work closely with a variety of German intermediary organizations, including the Goethe-Institut, the German Academic Exchange Service, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, and the German Historical Institute. Of course, the Cultural Affairs Department also maintains close contacts with the U.S. Department of State—especially concerning the exchange programs sponsored by our two countries, such as the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Program, the program of the German-American Fulbright Commission, and the German-American Partnership Program.
We deal with questions concerning the German and American university systems, our high school and university exchange programs, the promotion of the German language, and the Transatlantic Outreach Program, which offers support to U.S. Social Studies teachers. Given all the recent positive changes initiated in the German system of higher education—for example, the introduction of bachelor and master degrees and programs of study in the English language—we are even more keen to invite American students to study and live in Germany for an extended period.
