Departments The Political Department of the German Embassy plays an important role in shaping the German-U.S. relationship as part of the transatlantic alliance between Europe and the United States. The combined expertise of delegated German officers and local policy experts provides the Foreign Office in Berlin and all other branches of the German Federal Government with analyses of major U.S. foreign and domestic policy issues. In particular, reports from the Political Department inform German decision-makers about U.S. policies that will affect Germany as one of America's closest allies. In this age of universal and almost instantaneous media coverage, the Political Department's reporting attempts to distinguish itself by offering information obtained through the department's immediate access to important policymaking institutions in the U.S. The Embassy's officers maintain close contacts with the White House, other agencies of the U.S. Administration, Congress, and a large number of nongovernmental organizations, including think-tanks, labor unions, and business associations. The Political Department also serves as a major facilitator of political dialogue between the German and U.S. governments, as well as between lawmakers and officials from both countries. The Visitors Office of the Embassy organizes the visits of over 300 German delegations every year, ranging from the Federal Chancellor, the Foreign Minister, members of parliament from both the governing and opposition parties to government officials involved in consultations on nonproliferation, security cooperation, antiterrorism, and other political issues. For the quality of its work, the Political Department relies on experts
from a wide variety of professional backgrounds. The staff includes historians,
political scientists, lawyers, and experts on the world's major regions,
including the Middle East, South and East Asia, and Eastern Europe. Besides
past assignments at the Foreign Office in Berlin and other foreign missions
throughout the world, a number of officers have extensive experience in
working at the German Federal Chancellery, on labor relations, on political-military
affairs, and on antiterrorism. In addition, some of the staff can draw
on their experience from working within the U.S. Government, Congress,
and the State Department.
