Germany Again World’s Export Champion

German exporters achieved recorded sales in 2007 for the fifth year in a row. Exports rose 8.5 percent relative to the previous year, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office.

In 2007, German companies sold goods worth 969.1 billion euros abroad. Germany was thus able to beat out China again for the title of export champion, initial results show.

Imports to Germany also grew last year. In 2007, goods valuing 770.4 billion euros were imported, representing a 5 percent increase over the prior year.

Germany thus registered a trade surplus of 198.8 billion euros last year. In 2006, the surplus totaled 159 billion euros.

Close Economic Relations with the European Union

Germany’s most important trading partners are the European Union member states. With goods worth 627.6 billion euros, nearly two-thirds of German exports flow to these countries. Likewise, almost two-thirds of German imports originate (502.6 billion euros) from countries of the European Union.

German exports to the EU countries climbed by 11.1 percent last year relative to 2006, while imports jumped 8.4 percent. German exports and imports to EU countries thus rose significantly higher than to countries outside the EU in 2007. Compared with 2006, exports to third countries rose 4.1 percent and imports from those countries dropped 1 percent.
