Press Releases February 28, 2008 "More police officers for Afghanistan" - Joint article by Wolfgang Schäuble, Federal Minister of the Interior and Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, February 24, 2008 Europe and the United States have a common political interest in bringing to a resolution the conflict in the Middle East, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Thursday in Berlin before her meeting with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. The European Union, within the framework of the Quartet, wants to make a contribution to that, Merkel said. “We are ready to make such a political contribution because we know that the resolution of this conflict, or least progress, also has an impact on all other conflicts,” Merkel said. Secretary Rice announced that she has invited the Quartet—which consists of the European Union, the United States, Russia, and the UN—to meet in Washington at the end of next week, probably on February 2. Chancellor Merkel thanked Secretary Rice for coming to Berlin to report on her trip to the Middle East and said she had the impression that there is now movement in the issue of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Chancellor Merkel had promoted a revitalization of the Middle East Quartet to President George W. Bush on her first visit to Washington as EU Council President on January 4. Secretary Rice also emphasized the importance of transatlantic cooperation during the German EU Council Presidency and agreed with the Chancellor that progress in the Middle East conflict also has a positive impact on the conflicts in the region as a whole. It is very important to have this discussion at the very beginning of the German presidencies of the EU and G8, Rice said, because transatlantic cooperation within Germany’s EU Presidency will be of great significance, Secretary Rice said. Secretary Rice met with German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Berlin Wednesday. Link
