Atlantik-Brücke to Honor Dr. Jürgen Grossmann in New York on June 5
Dr. Jürgen Grossmann, owner of the business group Georgsmarienhütte Holding GmbH, will be presented with Atlantik-Brücke’s Vernon A. Walters Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to transatlantic friendship. The award ceremony will take place at a benefit gala at the New York Metropolitan Club on June 5, 2007, at 6:30 p.m. Robert B. Zoellick, former U.S. Deputy Secretary of State and current Managing Director and Vice Chairman, International, of Goldman, Sachs & Co. New York, will give the laudation. Former German Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and Minister President of the State of Lower Saxony Christian Wulff will deliver remarks.
With the proceeds from the evening, the Atlantik-Brücke will fund two-week study trips to Germany for American social studies teachers. The visitors’ program will include presentations on contemporary German society and meetings with political and business leaders, as well as with students and teachers. The primary goal of these trips is to provide American social studies teachers with a more accurate picture of current day Germany, which they will then pass on to their students, colleagues, families, and entire communities back home
The award’s namesake, Vernon A. Walters (1917-2002), served as U.S. Ambassador to Germany from 1989 to 1991. From 1985 to 1989 he was the Chief U.S. Representative to the United Nations, and prior to this he traveled to some 100 countries as a diplomat in the Reagan administration. He has been recognized with numerous honors and distinguished service awards for his ceaseless devotion to freedom and world peace.
Last year, DaimlerChrysler Chairman Dr. Dieter Zetsche was honored with the Vernon A. Walters Award. Previous recipients have included Dr. Michael Otto (Otto Group, 2005), Wolfgang Mayrhuber (Lufthansa AG, 2004), Dr. Bernd Pischetsrieder (Volkswagen AG, 2002), and Dr. Manfred Schneider (Bayer AG, 2000).
The Atlantik-Brücke was founded in 1952 as a private, nonpartisan, and nonprofit organization aimed at building bridges between postwar Germany and the United States, one of the victorious powers of World War II. Among its members are over 500 leading figures from politics, business, the media, and academia. Atlantik-Brücke’s activities center on promoting better understanding between the United States and Germany.
