German Embassy Rides EU Presidency Bus Promotion to a Smooth Finish

The German Embassy took its promotion of the German EU Presidency this year to the streets, literally, sending a conspicuous, blue “wrapped” Metro Bus throughout Washington beginning in January. Traversing the city primarily on the Pennsylvania Avenue line from Georgetown through Foggy Bottom and Downtown to Capitol Hill and Southeast, the bus bearing Germany’s signature color and logo for its six-month presidency has been quite a site.

So it makes sense that the embassy’s website, Germany.Info, has been running a “Spot the Bus” contest, calling on Washingtonians to take pictures of the bus in action and submit them online for a chance to win an iPod Shuffle or an EU Presidency souvenir.

With announcements on WAMU, in Email newsletters and in campus newspapers, word of the Spot the Bus Contest on Germany.Info has spread, and people have submitted over 100 photos, uploading their images and comments online. A slideshow and text crawl on Germany.Info display the photos and comments. The contest and Germany’s EU Presidency end on June 30.

The embassy also chartered the bus for several special events, including the EU Open House on May 12, when the German EU Presidency bus was one of several that ferried visitors to European Union embassies throughout Northwest.

“With this bus and the online contest we have found innovative ways to reach out to a real cross-section of the population, the wide variety of people who ride Metro and who are on the streets of DC every day,” Ambassador Scharioth said. “We wanted to bring the European Union and Germany closer to the public. To put it in the simplest terms, I hope this big, blue bus has become a familiar and welcome site to Washingtonians and that, consequently, they view the EU and Germany as even more familiar and welcoming too.”
