Press Releases September 1, 2005 Members of German Embassy Together with other German Colleagues in Washington Call for Donations to Help Hurricane Victims
Members of the German Embassy, together with the German School Washington Community, the Goethe Institut and the German Historical Institute, would like to make a German contribution to the particularly impoverished areas of Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama that have been devastated by Hurricane Katrina. “Surely we can’t make a contribution that will cover the restoration of these three states, but what we can do is make a human gesture of solidarity in a difficult time,” Embassy Press Counselor Martina Nibbeling-Wriessnig and Embassy Cultural Counselor Thomas Wriessnig wrote on behalf of Embassy colleagues in a letter to German media, organizations and individuals on September 1. While this is a private initiative, members of the Embassy have received permission to use the Embassy’s network and infrastructure to call for donations from German citizens, companies and organizations in the United States and to make use of the German American Solidarity Fund. The German American Solidarity Fund was initially created by Ambassador Wolfgang Ischinger in 2001 immediately after the terrorist attacks of September 11 and served as a way for German citizens and corporations in the United States to make financial contributions to help victims of that attack. The call for donations to aid hurricane victims is aimed at German citizens, companies and organizations, however, because the German American Solidarity Fund is a registered 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, contributions from US taxpayers are tax-deductible. Organizers will work with the German Consulates responsible for the affected region to determine how best to distribute the contributions. Bank of America has generously set up an account at no cost to the Embassy. If you would like to contribute, please make the check out to “German American Solidarity Fund, Inc” and write “Mississippi” in the memo line.
