Germany Contributes $150,000 to U.S. NGO Survey Action Center for Landmine Survey in Afghanistan

German Ambassador Wolfgang Ischinger today signed a contract for a contribution of up to $150,000 (up to 125,000 euros) to the Survey Action Center for a Landmine Impact Survey in Afghanistan. Robert Eaton, Executive Director of the SAC, joined Ambassador Ischinger at the German Embassy to sign the contract.

The survey is an essential step in the efforts to free Afghanistan of landmines. By providing reliable information on the location of minefields and hazardous areas, the survey will help all organizations involved in mine clearing in Afghanistan, including the UN Mine Action Centre for Afghanistan, to steer their efforts effectively and to those communities that are the worst affected.

Since 1995, Germany has provided over 23 million euros to support humanitarian mine clearing activities in Afghanistan. Germany supported the Survey Action Center in 2002 and again in 2003 with contributions for the Landmine Impact Survey in Angola and has also supported the Landmine Impact Survey in Ethiopia.

Survey Action Center is an international organization headquartered in Takoma Park, Maryland. Its board of directors consists of lead NGOs in mine action – Handicap International, Mine Clearance Planning Agency, and Norwegian People’s Aid. SAC serves as the coordinating body for Landmine Impact Surveys, which provide vital information to improve priority setting by donors and mine action agencies in the international effort to eliminate or control the threat of mines by the year 2010.
