The President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Horst Köhler, today congratulated Al Gore on having been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize

Federal President Köhler wrote:

Dear Mr. Gore:

Please accept my sincere congratulations and those of the German people on your being awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. By choosing to confer this prestigious prize on you and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the Nobel Committee has issued a clear signal for the future.

The in-depth scientific reports produced by the IPCC and your untiring dedication to the cause have contributed greatly to ensuring that the dangers of climate change are no longer discussed in specialist circles alone, but are also on the public agenda around the world. Awareness that the nations of the world now form a community with a common destiny has increased, especially in western industrialized countries. I believe we now have a golden opportunity to finally also become a community that shares responsibility and learns together.

I hope for your sake and for ours that you will remain true to your commitment to the environment and will continue to pursue it with the same inexhaustible energy.

Sincerely yours,

Horst Köhler
President of the Federal Republic of Germany
