Germany.info Publishes Feature on Fall of Berlin Wall

November 9 will mark the 18th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the concrete and barbwire structure that had served as the icon of the Cold War and divided not only a city and a country, but a people. The surprising opening of checkpoints in Berlin and along the inner-German border on that November night in 1989 were the first steps toward the reunification of Germany nearly one year later on October 3, 1990.

The German Embassy offers a multimedia look back at that historic moment with an online special at www.Germany.info/fallofthewall. The feature includes a unique collection of original, first-person accounts of that time period; a timeline from the Berlin Wall’s construction in 1961 to German unification in 1990; a video of some of those unforgettable moments; and a roundup of commemorative events in New York and Washington, DC. It also includes a preview of the deliberations by the German parliament on whether to erect a monument to freedom and peace in time for the 20th anniversary of the fall of the wall in 2009. The Bundestag will decide on whether to erect such a monument on Friday, November 9.
