Leopoldina to Become Germany's National Academy of Sciences

The German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in Halle is to become Germany’s National Science Academy. "I am extremely pleased that we are finally able to establish a national academy here in Germany. It is vital that policymakers and researchers engage in ongoing dialogue", said Minister Schavan.

Science and research ministers from the federal states met with federal officials to approve Schavan's proposal for a National Academy on Monday February 18 in Berlin.

In its new capacity as the National Science Academy, the Leopoldina Academy will play an advisory role and issue position papers and statements which Minister Schavan said will "contain the knowledge and information needed by decision makers in the public sphere".

It will also act as the voice of German science and research at international level and will thus be comparable with other national academies in Europe and the US.

The Leopoldina Academy is the oldest academy of science and medicine in Europe. In recent years, it has made significant contributions to science policy consultations at both the national and international levels. (www.bundesregierung.de)
