Cross-border Scholarship

The German French University in Saarbrücken

The German-French University was founded in 1999, offering students a German-French education in more than 100 subjects and offering a dual degree upon completion. The goal of the University is the strengthening of the collaboration between Germany and France in the area of secondary education. The institution is an asssociation of partner universities in Germany and France with a decentralized campus and administrative headquarters in Saarbrücken. Currently, more than 3 000 students are involved in a binational study course in Germany and France, half of them receiving a monthly "mobility grant" by the University.

There are many advantages to the integrated course of study under the roof of the German French University. Certainly one advantage is the acquisition of two national diplomas without an extension of one's studies. Students gain a deepened understanding of the culture in another country, they are exempt from tuition fees at the partner University and they have a chance of being given a travel grant by the German French University for the duration of their stay at the partner University. As for the long term career prospects, an extended stay in another country means international competency and intensive language training in a specific field, giving students a distinct advantage over their competetitors. During their stay in the other country, students take part in many University events and become a member of a German French group of students, who enjoy special care and support for the entire duration of the course of study. In many cases the students stay in contact after graduation. Another distinct advantage of the programs is the acknowledgement of the accomplishments brought about at the partner University by the home University, preventing administrative difficulty often associated in privately organized study trips.

Courses are offered in architecture, arts and cultural sciences, engineering, mathematics, computer science, science, medicine, law and business. Furthermore, the University offers grants for graduate school courses with the German-French graduate college and as well as supporting German-French doctoral dissertations with the "Cotutelle de thèse".

German and French students complete the largest part of their studies together, based on a course of study determined by the partner Universities and the duration of the studies is divided equally amongst both partner Universities. The professors of both Universities work together to develop a joint course of study, which has to be approved by both boards. After successful completion, the student is awarded a diploma by both partner Universities.

Financial support granted by the German French University goes towards the infrastructure of the Partner Universities and student travels during their foreign stay (a maximum of 307 Euro per month), as well as towards preparation language classes. Interested German and French students must apply directly to the individual university of their choice. The student then has to enroll in his home university as well as in the German French University. In most cases, the student will also be enrolled at the partner university. Additionally, a German-French study and job fair ("German-French Forum") is held annually.
