On a memorable day celebrating the fall of the Berlin Wall, I was working as a consultant with the World Bank, having retired several years. German colleagues at the bank mentioned special services to be held that evening at the National Cathedral in Washington, so attendance became a priority.
As the cathedral was completely filled with no pews empty, I stood propped against a pillar throughout the inspirational multi-faith service.
I recalled my own grandparents from Niederbayern, single young persons in search of opportunity in a new land, who with millions of other Germans traveled in circa 1885 to America’s heartland. My grandfather, born in the same year as the Kaiser, established citizenship, met and married my courageous young grandmother, who had left the Heimatland in order to work and send money back to her parents. Neither of them ever returned.
Luckily for me, after establishing a family of eight children, they enjoyed rewarding and successful lives.
Listening to the hymns that evening to mark Germany’s reunification reminded me of my heritage!
