Books in Germany
Other media may come and go, but books are here to stay in Germany. That
is the message publishers are sending out this October as visitors from
around the globe gather at the Frankfurt Book Fair, the most important
annual event in publishing. Germany is the home of some of the world’s
most influential publishing companies, and its cities support a thriving
literary scene. This month InFocus takes a closer look at the German book
world, with a glimpse at some of its most compelling works available in
English.
For six days each October, Frankfurt hosts the world’s largest international trade fair for publishing, the Frankfurt Book Fair. Some 400,000 titles, including 100,000 recent works, are exhibited by publishers from more than 100 countries.
Germany’s love affair with the book is as old as the printing press,
developed by Johannes Gutenberg in the 15th century. More than 500 years
later, the publishing and bookselling trade remains one of the country’s
thriving industries.
Some of Germany’s most talked about new books are making the leap across the Atlantic this year. Short stories and novels from a new generation of German writers as well as best-selling histories and biographies are now coming out in English translation. InFocus profiles a brief selection of new fiction and nonfiction here. |
