Medal Contenders 2002
Luge champion Georg Hackl is going for more than gold in Salt Lake City. He wants to go down in history. 2002 will be his chance to become the first athlete to win four consecutive gold medals at the Winter Games. And the rest of Germany's luge team, men and women, are well positioned to round out the medal count this year.
"Eagles" Sven Hannawald and Martin Schmitt are both looking to dominate on the ski jump. Hannawald is literally soaring into the games on the wings of his triumph at all four of the Four Hills competitions, the first ski-jumper to accomplish that feat.
Speedskater Anni Friesinger hopes to improve on her bronze medal performance in Nagano and faces perhaps the stiffest competition from her own teammate, Claudia Pechstein.
The biathlon athletes, men and women, plan to ski and shoot their way to the tops of several podiums.
In the young Olympic sport of snowboarding, Nicola Thorst is returning to defend her gold-medal in the half-pipe in Nagano.
Skeleton, perhaps the oldest of the extreme sports, makes a return to the Olympics after 54 years. Germany's skeleton athletes are hopeful of a respectable showing.
