The Week in Germany: Politics October 21, 2005 Merkel doll unveiled A doll designed to resemble conservative leader Angela Merkel went on sale this week in a limited edition its designer hopes will appeal to collectors and supporters of the incoming chancellor.
The baby-faced doll features eyes that open and shut and real human hair styled like Merkel's trademark cut, toy designer Marcel Offermann told the BBC. Its attire a dark blue pants suit worn with pearls and a pink T-shirt is inspired by the outfit Merkel wore on election night last month. At 189 EUR each ($225), the 18-inch doll doesn't come cheap. Yet with a limited edition of only 999 manufactured by the esteemed Schildkroet doll factory, buyers looking to commemorate Germany's first female chancellor are well-advised to place their orders quickly. By Thursday, more than 80 dolls had been sold sight unseen Offermann told dpa news agency. Offermann, who earlier this year released another special edition doll in the likeness of newly-elected Pope Benedict XVI, said his latest doll presented a number of design challenges, chief among them doing justice to Merkel's ever-evolving hairstyle. "In the last weeks of the election we were always updating the hairstyle to match Mrs. Merkel herself, because she was also continually changing hers," he said. The real-life Merkel meanwhile completed the line-up of her power-sharing government on Monday, giving her occasion to flash a broader smile than the one on her namesake doll. Links:
