The Week in Germany: Current Affairs August 25, 2006 Chancellor Merkel: Germany will Take on Responsibility in the Middle East
In a statement on Monday, the German Chancellor declared that Germany is ready to send a Navy unit to help secure the Lebanese coast. Chancellor Angela Merkel ruled out, however, the deployment of German police and combat troops in Lebanon. Lebanon has agreed to protection of its coastline by UN troops, but the German Parliament must give its approval before German troops can be deployed. The Bundeswehr is already providing support for international humanitarian aid efforts for Lebanon by sending two C-160 Transall transport planes to the region. One is flying aid supplies to Beirut from Amman, Jordan and the other from Cyprus. More on this story at Germany.info... Merkel: Iran’s response is lacking In a television interview later this week, Chancellor Merkel said that Iran’s response to the international community’s offer on the nuclear conflict was lacking in that it did not contain a promise to suspend uranium enrichment.
