Dallas Maverick Dirk Nowitzki Leads Germany’s Basketball Team to the Final Sixteen in a Triple Overtime Victory against Angola

With a spot in the final sixteen already assured by an unsurprising win against Panama on Wednesday, the only thing at stake in Thursday’s game against Angola was second place in Group B of this year’s World Basketball Championships in Japan. That didn’t stop the German national team from delivering a stunning high-stamina high performance in an unprecedented triple overtime victory against the African champions.

Nowitzki gets around Angola's defences

The Dallas Maverick Nowitzki scored 47 points and landed 17 of 17 free throws. Despite a slow start, the 7-footer steadily increased the intensity of his game, scoring 11 of Germany’s 13 points during the final overtime period, bringing the final score to 108:103.

While Nowitzki dominated the game, coach Dirk Bauerman’s troops played exemplary team basketball, with strong performances from Ademola Okulaja (14 points) and Patrick Femerling.

The win in Hiroshima earned the Germans a spot in Sunday’s match in Tokyo, where they will face defending champions Serbia and Montenegro, France, or Lebanon. Nowitzki said that their performance against Angola gave them the confidence they will need to face the even higher caliber of competition in the final round (which will include the top ranked and undefeated U.S. team). “The opponent doesn’t matter to us. Now we can go into the single elimination round with confidence and the right wind at our backs.”
